three + a silence for croydon was developed through a close collaboration with the aoj, a community of jamaican elders based in croydon on different ways to explore, record and celebrate their legacies as black croydonians
based on these workshops and taking inspiration from the second movement of the clarinet quintet by croydonian composer samuel coleridge taylor, three + a silence... was composed for clarinet, violin, cello and electronics in a mix of written notation, graphic score created by the elders and improvisational instructions.
a space to reflect on croydon, its deep history and its people.
the piece was performed and recorded by players from chineke! orchestra and was presented as a 5 channel sound as installation conisting of vintage hi fis and radios, the score in full and a small library of books on black british history, croydon and music at turf projects.
